rvss.eel I tend to gravitate toward jazz that is piano-led, and jazz that has a prominent drum/rhythm presence, so it's no surprise that this is an easy win for me, those being two of The Thousandth Scholar's most distinctive features. The percussionist in addition to drummer is just so much fun. But it's not that simple: the tunes are excellent. The opener sets a great tone and the variety throughout keeps it all fresh. One note to Reggie though, from an amateur listener: I always want more drum solos!

Don Carlos An Absolutely Fantastic Album!
I was inspired in the first 45-seconds of hearing the rhythms and piano-progressions. Very modern with some serious classic roots....tough to pick a favorite track! Favorite track: Folk Song.

about

"The Thousandth Scholar," the forthcoming fifth album by the Houston-born, Los Angeles-based drummer-composer Reggie Quinerly, finds the leader continuing to challenge himself with new musical directions and collaborators. Here he immerses himself in Afro-Cuban music with an Ahmad Jamal-style quartet boasting drums and percussion: the Havana-born pianist Manuel Valera; Matt Brewer on bass; and Bogota native Samuel Torres on percussion.
